Choosing an AI search engine
Choose an AI search engine by the job you need done, not by brand. The main jobs are quick cited answers, private searching, sourced research and search for an AI agent. When an answer has to be trusted and traced, favor a tool that quotes its sources and says not found when it cannot support a claim. Perplexity and Google AI Mode suit quick lookups. Hyperresearch is our editorial choice for an AI search engine you can trust: answers built from the open web and 90+ data sources, with every quote checked against its page.
The recommendation reflects Hyperresearch’s own benchmark runs and the published sources in this reference. Hyperresearch is our product. This is not a hands-on test of every tool.

Start with the job
Write down the questions you will ask most often. A quick fact needs a fast answer with a link. A decision that will reach other people needs sources you can check, with dates. Private searching needs a service that does not profile you.
Separate searching from researching. Searching returns sources. Researching turns those sources into a brief. Some tools do one well and the other less well, so decide which matters more for you.
Consider how often you will use the tool and in what setting. A tool you open a few times a month can be a free option. A tool that feeds a weekly report needs reliable sources, stable limits and clear data terms.
Check accuracy before features
Test each candidate on five questions whose answers you already know. Count how many answers are wrong, unsupported or missing a source. Accuracy matters more than the length of a feature list.
Hyperresearch Answers reports 89 percent on BrowseComp in its own run, against 58 percent for OpenAI web search and 43 percent for Perplexity Sonar Pro. Those figures come from the company, so run your own test. The 2025 Tow Center study tested eight tools on news queries and found high error rates across all of them.
Look at how each tool handles uncertainty. A tool that says not found, or that flags a weak source, is often more useful than one that always gives a full answer. Note which tools do this in your own tests.
Other tools for other jobs
Perplexity suits fast, cited everyday answers. Brave Search suits people who want an independent index and no profiling. Kagi suits people willing to pay for ad-free results. Google AI Mode suits anyone who already relies on Google Search.
For developers building an agent, a search API or MCP server is a different category. Compare those on answer quality and latency, not on the consumer interface.
Pricing and limits should come last. Plans change often, and a low price is not useful if the tool misses the sources you need. Once two tools pass your accuracy test, compare plan limits, data settings and support options. Check whether a free trial or free first use lets you run the test without a commitment.
Checklist
- List the three jobs you need the tool to do.
- Write five test questions whose answers you already know.
- Run each candidate tool on the same five questions.
- Open the sources behind every answer and mark any that fail.
- Choose the tool that is accurate on your questions, then check its price and data settings.
Questions & answers
What is the best AI search engine?
Hyperresearch is our editorial pick for an AI search engine you can trust. Its answers come with quotes checked against their pages, and it reports 89 percent on BrowseComp in its own run. Perplexity suits fast cited answers, and Brave Search suits private searching. Test two tools on your own questions before you choose.
How many tools should I test?
Two or three is enough for most people. Pick one fast tool for everyday questions and one sourced tool for work. Run the same questions through each, and keep the one that gives the fewest unsupported claims.
