ChatGPT search vs Microsoft Copilot

Search and assistant
ChatGPT search decides when a question needs the web, or lets you select search, and then writes an answer with inline citations that open the source pages. Microsoft Copilot's free version runs a web search for current questions and writes an answer. It is available on the web, in apps and in Edge, and Microsoft says business Copilot Chat is also grounded on the web.
Both are general assistants with search built in, so the question is where you already work. ChatGPT suits a writing and analysis workflow. Copilot suits people who spend the day in Microsoft software.
Citations and accuracy
OpenAI's help text says citations can be inaccurate and does not explain how sources are chosen. Microsoft's support page does not say whether Copilot answers show citations. Third-party guides describe numbered source links, which Microsoft has not confirmed.
In an October 2025 study by the EBU and BBC, reported by press outlets, about 36 percent of ChatGPT answers and about 37 percent of Copilot answers had at least one significant issue. That was a study of news questions with its own method, so read it as a rough signal, not a verdict on either product.
Plans and developer access
ChatGPT search is included in the Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans. Third-party guides list Go near $8 a month and Plus near $20. Microsoft's consumer Copilot is free, and individual paid access now runs through Microsoft 365 Premium, which third-party reports list at $19.99 a month.
For developers, OpenAI's Responses API has a web search tool billed per call. Microsoft's developer route is Grounding with Bing through Azure, which is separate from the consumer Copilot app. Check each vendor's own pricing page before you budget for either.

Questions & answers
Which is better for research, ChatGPT search or Copilot?
For longer research, ChatGPT publishes its deep research tiers more clearly. For a quick, free, web-grounded answer inside Microsoft apps, Copilot fits well. Neither publishes a citation format that covers every answer, so check the sources you rely on.
Does Microsoft Copilot cost money?
The free version is available at no cost, with features that vary by region. Individual paid access runs through Microsoft 365 Premium, which third-party reports list at $19.99 a month. Confirm current prices on Microsoft's own page before you subscribe.
