Where each one lives
Google AI Mode sits inside Google Search. It splits a question into subtopics, runs them together, and writes one answer with links to the pages it used. Microsoft Copilot is a general assistant that runs a web search for current questions and writes an answer. It is available on the web, in apps and in Edge.
Copilot does more general assistant work, such as drafting and summarizing, while AI Mode stays close to search. If you mostly want a fact with a source, AI Mode is the more direct tool.
Citations and checking
Google says AI Mode can misread sources or miss context, and it recommends checking several sites. Press reports from October 2026 say Google added inline links next to bullet points in AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Microsoft's support page does not say whether Copilot answers show citations. Third-party guides describe numbered source links that Microsoft has not confirmed. In an October 2025 EBU and BBC study, reported by press outlets, Copilot was among the assistants with frequent significant issues, so verify what you use from either tool.
Price and access
AI Mode is free in supported regions. Google's plans page lists AI Pro at $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year, with four times the usage limits of non-AI plans. Copilot is free, with features that vary by region. Individual paid access runs through Microsoft 365 Premium, which third-party reports list at $19.99 a month.
We did not find a public consumer search API for either product. Google's developer products are separate from AI Mode, and Microsoft's developer route is Grounding with Bing through Azure.
