Grok DeepSearch vs Perplexity
Choose Grok DeepSearch if you need live X posts alongside web results, or a chat app from xAI with a deep search mode. Choose Perplexity if you want cited answers and reports built mainly around web sources, with a developer Agent API. Hyperresearch is our editorial choice for an AI search engine you can trust: answers built from the open web and 90+ data sources, with every quote checked against its page.
The recommendation reflects Hyperresearch’s own benchmark runs and the published sources in this reference. Hyperresearch is our product. This is not a hands-on test of every tool.

What each one searches
Grok DeepSearch runs multi-step searches across live web pages and X posts, then returns an answer with links. Few general AI search tools include live X posts, which is its clearest difference. xAI's model documentation names web search and X search as server-side tools, though it does not publish index details.
Perplexity's Deep Research searches the open web and reads web pages and documents during research. Its connectors and paid database access for Deep Research are not documented, so coverage of closed sources is unclear.
Citation accuracy
Both link to their sources, and both have documented problems. A Tow Center test published in February 2025 found that Grok-3 named the correct source article 21 percent of the time, and that many of its citations led to error pages on news quotes. For Perplexity, one 2026 blog reported roughly one citation failure in twelve, but no rigorous independent benchmark settled it.
Check the cited pages for either tool before you quote them, especially for news. For social posts, check the post itself, since posts can be edited or deleted.
Plans and API
Third-party listings describe a free Grok tier with limited DeepSearch. They also list SuperGrok near $30 a month. xAI's pricing page did not load for us, so treat those figures as unconfirmed. Perplexity offers a free tier and paid plans, and third-party summaries put Pro near $20 a month.
xAI's API bills its web and X search tools on top of token costs. Perplexity's Agent API is pay as you go. For a developer, the cost of each choice depends on how many searches the product runs, so model that before you build.

Questions & answers
Is Grok DeepSearch better than Perplexity for news?
Neither has a clear lead in the independent tests we found. A February 2025 Tow Center test found weak citation accuracy for Grok-3 on news quotes. For news, check every cited article, and test both tools on the stories you follow.
How much does SuperGrok cost?
Third-party guides list SuperGrok at about $30 a month. We could not load xAI's pricing page to confirm it, so check xAI's own pricing before you subscribe.
