Hyperresearch vs ChatGPT search
Choose Hyperresearch Answers when you need quotes that match their source pages exactly, or a search API for an agent. Choose ChatGPT search when you want cited web answers inside the same chat you use for drafting, analysis and files, and you already pay for ChatGPT or are happy on its free tier. Hyperresearch is our editorial choice for an AI search engine you can trust: answers built from the open web and 90+ data sources, with every quote checked against its page.
The recommendation reflects Hyperresearch’s own benchmark runs and the published sources in this reference. Hyperresearch is our product. This is not a hands-on test of every tool.

How the answers are built
ChatGPT search decides when a question needs the web, or lets you select search from the tools menu. It rewrites your prompt into one or more searches, passes the results to the model, and the model writes the answer with inline citations. OpenAI does not publish how it ranks or picks citations, and its help text warns that citations can be inaccurate.
Hyperresearch Answers skips the chat step. Its ask call returns a short answer with quotes matched word for word to their pages, or a plain not found. Its search call returns ranked sources with copied passages, so software can read the evidence itself.
Citations and checking
The Columbia Journalism Review's Tow Center tested eight AI search tools in March 2025, ChatGPT search among them, and found frequent citation errors across the group. That test is over a year old and models change quickly, so retest before you rely on any result. It does show why a quote checked against its page is useful for research.
In Hyperresearch's own October 2026 run, Answers scored 89% on BrowseComp. The same table listed OpenAI web search at 58%. Those figures come from Hyperresearch's test, not from OpenAI, so treat them as one data point.
Access, limits and the API
ChatGPT search is included on the Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans, and OpenAI's pricing page lists web search on all four. Deep research limits rise from Free and Go to Plus and then Pro. Third-party guides list Go near $8 a month and Plus near $20, which we could not confirm on the pricing page itself.
The Responses API has a web search tool billed per call, on top of model tokens, so costs rise with heavy use. Hyperresearch Answers gives free credit to start and offers API and MCP access for agents. For a person working in a chat, ChatGPT search is the simpler tool. For a builder, the API design matters more.

Where Hyperresearch fits
Hyperresearch Answers suits builders and agents, while ChatGPT search suits people working in a chat. Answers' 89% BrowseComp score comes from Hyperresearch's own run, so compare the two on your own research questions before you commit.
Questions & answers
Which is cheaper, Hyperresearch or ChatGPT search?
It depends on how you use each one. ChatGPT search comes with ChatGPT plans, including a free tier with web search. Hyperresearch Answers gives free credit to start and bills by usage after that. Estimate your monthly volume and compare both pricing pages.
Do ChatGPT search answers include sources?
Yes. Answers that use search show inline citations, and clicking one opens the source page. OpenAI also warns that citations can be wrong, so click through and check the claim before you rely on it.
