Index and search
Kagi is a paid, ad-free search engine. Its Assistant uses Kagi Search when web access is on, and users can apply Lenses and personalized results. You can also paste a URL for the Assistant to read. Brave Search AI draws on Brave's own index, rather than on Google or Bing results, and shows its answers beside the regular results.
The choice comes down to whether you want a search engine you pay for, or a free answer layer over an independent index. Kagi gives more control over the results themselves.
Citations and verification
Kagi's Assistant help page does not describe how its answers cite sources, so we cannot confirm the citation format. Its search results do show the source links. Brave says its answers show cited pages and that grounding reduces made-up answers without guaranteeing accuracy.
We found no independent accuracy study of either the Kagi Assistant or Brave's answers. Check cited pages on questions you already know before you depend on either tool.
Plans and API
Kagi's pricing page lists a trial with 100 searches, Starter at $5 a month with 300 searches, Professional at $10 a month with unlimited searches, and Ultimate at $25 a month with unlimited searches, flagship models and Research mode. Prices exclude sales tax, and annual billing is listed at 10 percent off. Kagi's search API is listed at $12 per 1,000 requests.
Brave says its answers on search.brave.com are free for consumers on desktop and mobile, and that it may add a paid tier later with no price set. Its Answers API costs $4 per 1,000 requests plus $5 per million tokens, with $5 of free credit each month. That makes it the cheaper route for a developer who wants to test.
