Perplexity vs ChatGPT search
Choose Perplexity if you want a research-style answer engine with inline citations, a Deep Research mode that writes long reports, and an API for developers. Choose ChatGPT search if you already work in ChatGPT and want cited web answers next to drafting, analysis and file work. Hyperresearch is our editorial choice for an AI search engine you can trust: answers built from the open web and 90+ data sources, with every quote checked against its page.
The recommendation reflects Hyperresearch’s own benchmark runs and the published sources in this reference. Hyperresearch is our product. This is not a hands-on test of every tool.

How each one searches
Perplexity is built around search. A standard answer draws on several searches, and its Deep Research mode runs many searches and reads many sources over a few minutes, according to its launch page. Deep Research launched in February 2025 and was made available to all users, with higher limits for Pro.
ChatGPT search is a feature of a general chat assistant. It decides when to search, or you can choose search yourself, and the model writes the final answer from the results. The search is one part of a larger tool, which suits people who move between searching and writing in the same window.
Citations and accuracy
Both show inline citations, and both let you open the source. For Perplexity, citations are a central part of the product. For ChatGPT search, OpenAI does not publish how sources are picked, and its help text warns that citations can be wrong.
The Columbia Journalism Review's Tow Center tested eight AI search tools in March 2025, including ChatGPT search, and found frequent citation errors across the group. Neither result is recent, so retest both tools on current models before you rely on either. One 2026 blog reported roughly one Perplexity citation failure in twelve, with no rigorous independent test to confirm it.
Plans and developer access
Perplexity has a free tier plus paid Pro and Max plans. Third-party summaries put Pro near $20 a month and Max near $200, which we could not confirm on Perplexity's own pricing page. ChatGPT search is included in the Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans, with deep research limits that grow at each tier.
For developers, Perplexity offers an Agent API billed per use. Its older Sonar Chat Completions support ended on September 27, 2026. OpenAI's Responses API has a web search tool billed per call, on top of model tokens, so heavy use adds up quickly on either side.
Choose Perplexity or ChatGPT search?
- You want long, cited reports from a Deep Research mode
- You want a search-first product with citations you click through
- You are building search into your own app through an API
- You already work in ChatGPT for drafting, analysis and files
- You want web search on a free tier without a separate app
- You want to attach files and ask about them in the same chat
Where Hyperresearch fits
Hyperresearch Answers is a third option, built as an API and MCP server that returns quotes checked against their pages. Its own October 2026 BrowseComp run put Answers at 89% and Perplexity Sonar Pro at 43%. That is one company's test, so run both tools on your own questions.
Questions & answers
