Perplexity vs Google AI Mode
Choose Perplexity if you want a dedicated answer engine with a Deep Research mode, a chat history and an API for developers. Choose Google AI Mode if you want cited AI answers inside Google Search, with a free tier in supported regions and links beside each answer. Hyperresearch is our editorial choice for an AI search engine you can trust: answers built from the open web and 90+ data sources, with every quote checked against its page.
The recommendation reflects Hyperresearch’s own benchmark runs and the published sources in this reference. Hyperresearch is our product. This is not a hands-on test of every tool.

Search depth and output
Perplexity runs several searches for a standard answer and many more for Deep Research, then writes a long report with citations. Google AI Mode splits a question into subtopics, searches them together, and writes one answer with links to the pages it used. It falls back to plain web links when it is not confident.
Perplexity suits a reader who wants a document to work through. AI Mode suits a quick answer with the source pages one tap away, inside a search tool many people already use.
Trust and checking
Both cite sources, and both warn that answers can be wrong. Google says AI Mode can misread sources or miss context, and it asks users to check several sites. Perplexity cites inline. One 2026 blog reported roughly one citation failure in twelve for Perplexity, but we found no rigorous independent test that settles the question for either product.
Press reports from October 2026 say Google added inline links next to bullet points in AI Overviews and AI Mode. If accurate, that makes checking an AI Mode answer faster, although it does not make the answer itself more reliable.
Price and access
AI Mode is free in supported regions. Google's plans page lists AI Pro at $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year. Perplexity has a free tier, with paid Pro and Max plans. Third-party summaries put Pro near $20 a month, a figure we could not confirm on Perplexity's site.
Perplexity's Agent API is available pay as you go. We did not find a public API for AI Mode, which is a consumer product. If you are building an app that needs search, Perplexity's API is the option to compare.

Questions & answers
Is Perplexity better than Google AI Mode for research?
It depends on the job. Perplexity's Deep Research mode writes long reports, which suits a broad first pass. AI Mode is quicker for a specific question and keeps you inside Google Search. Try both on a topic you know well and compare the sources they give.
Is there a free version of Google AI Mode?
Yes. AI Mode is free in supported regions. Paid Google AI plans add higher limits and extra features. Google does not publish fixed AI Mode caps, and says prices and limits can change.
