Answer engine
A search product that returns one direct answer instead of a list of links.
What it means
An answer engine tries to end the search in one step. Instead of a page of links, you get a paragraph that addresses your question, often with a few citations attached. The format suits quick facts, such as a date, a price or a definition. It is less useful when the question has several reasonable answers, because the engine has to pick one and present it as settled.
The trade-off is visibility. A ranked list shows you where each claim came from, while a single answer can hide a weak source behind confident wording. Good answer engines reduce that risk by quoting the passage behind each claim and by saying so when no source supports an answer. Compare tools on those features, not on how polished the paragraph reads. See also AI search engine and citation.
